Driving Assessment Package

If you or a loved one are uncertain about your ability to continue safely driving, we offer an objective and unbiased Driving Assessment.

We understand that this may be a difficult and stressful discussion and decision. Our comprehensive evaluation includes three sessions.

  1. 45 min. in-person cognitive screening session with neuropsychologist Dr. Eric Freitag. This will include a 30 min. tablet-based DriveABLE Assessment which helps evaluates specific cognitive skills necessary for driving.

  2. 30 min. in-person driving simulator assessment to measure physical reaction and mobility. This will be done at Greenlight Simulation, located in Danville.

  3. 15 min. in-person, video, or telephone assessment review with Dr. Freitag.

Driving Assessment FAQs

What are some of the warning signs that there may be a problem with driving?

In general, the driver may show a decline in ability to do everyday tasks, have memory loss, and/or decline in physical functioning, including strength and balance. You may notice the driver has a lack of awareness of driving errors, close calls, drives too slowly, misses traffic signs, gets lost or confused, confuses the brake and gas pedal, or frequently gets honked at by other drivers.

What is involved in the driving assessment?

Before the first session, the driver will submit completed paperwork pertaining to their health history and current medications. Then the driver will have their first session with Dr. Freitag, where he will administer the DriveABLE Cognitive Assessment Test.

What is the DriveABLE Cognitive Assessment Test (DCAT)?

DCAT is a tablet-based assessment that provides a fair and accurate evaluation of an individual’s driving capacity. DCAT measures mental functions such as reaction time, visual perceptual abilities, decision-making ability, and hazard identification.

What if the patient has no experience with computers?

The DCAT is a tablet-based program with simplified controls and user interface. The user does not need any specific computer knowledge or skills.

What does the Greenilght Simulation session entail?

The driver will go to the Greenlight training facility in Danville for a 30 min. session in their driving simulator that will be facilitated by one of their driver trainers. The session will consist of various drills that were created to measure the driver’s physical reaction time and mobility. The results will be sent to Dr. Freitag to incorporate into his overall evaluation.

What is the cost of this package?

The entire package including the 3 separate sessions is $390, payable at the time of the first session.

Is this covered by insurance?

Unfortunately, this type of evaluation is not covered by insurance.

Do I need a doctor’s referral?

You do not need a doctor’s referral.
